PASTOR'S PEN - Weekly Newsletters

 Pastor's Weekly Update--March 9, 2010

Here's another reflection on the Cross from Calvin Miller. Read his words slowly, then again. Thank God for the gift of His Son!

"Once upon a tree, our Savior bled a royal river of access, whose rich flood ended in eternity. Drop by drop his war against sin drove back the forces of hell until every drop was gone. 'It is finished,' cried the Son, and the angels broke the universal hush with the battle cry of human liberation. His ghastly task finished all and left us with nothing else to do but lower our eyes and whisper 'miserere' -- have mercy upon us. So I bow my head and bend my knee before this mighty carpenter-conqueror. His place of dying lies at a fork in life's roads. Hell lies down one avenue and heaven up the other; and where the turnpike splits, hangs the Savior who illuminates my choice of destinies. I must stop where these two roads diverge and, like Bunyan's Pilgrim, look up into that faithful, thorn-ringed face. I cannot look too long, for just the shortest glance causes me to cast my eyes downward and beg him answer one question: Is all of this for me?"  (Once Upon a Tree, 23-24).

Thanks...

I wanted to thank you again for your wonderful participation last Sunday night at our combined worship with First Baptist Winchester! We had a great turnout, and I was so proud of all involved. Thanks to Pastor Steve Oldham for helping make these kinds of events happen, to Pastor Glenna for her leadership of our choir and ensembles, and to all who attended, brought food, etc. It was a good night, and we have plans to continue partnering with Pastor Derrick Jackson and the FBC congregation for other ministries & events. They are in the process of completing a new building, and acquiring adjacent property. Would you take a moment to pray for them today?

Sunday AM & Wednesday PM: "24 Hours That Changed the World..."
Last Sunday AM, we took a hard look at the Sanhedrin and Peter, and how pride and fear can blind us to God's best for our lives. This week, we continue walking with Jesus to the Cross through the Gospel of Mark. On Wednesdays at 6:30pm, I will facilitate a discussion of Adam Hamilton's video clips from this series to supplement the Sunday AM message. 40-day devotional books are also available in the church foyer for $5. Here's the schedule for the rest of this AM series:

March 14: "Jesus, Barabbas, and Pilate"

March 28: "The Torture and Humiliation of the King"

April 4 (Easter Sunday): "Jesus' Crucifixion & Resurrection"

"Wonder-Full Weekend" with Scott Humston, March 19-21...

Here are some specific ways you can help with this special weekend of outreach:

Pray - I have attached a prayer list that will help you to know how to pray specifically for this event.

Invite - ("Pack a Pew!") Begin inviting your family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, etc. Posters, brochures, and "free tickets" are available at the church; take a few & give them away!

Give - Make a donation to the church designated for "Wonder-Full Weekend"

Attend & Serve - Plan to be at each presentation. Can you help as a prayer counselor? Usher? Greeter? Follow-up team? Let me know and I will direct you to the right person.
Event Info: Master Magician and Christian evangelist Scott Humston will present a "Wonder-Full Weekend" (www.thewonder-fullweekend.com
) at our church and we are asking you to support it with your prayers, attendance, giving, and most of all... getting the word out to our community. Posters, brochures, and "free tickets" are available at the church for you to use. Invite your friends and neighbors! We are mailing 3,277 brochures to our church neighbors later this week. The purpose is to reach as many people as possible with the Good News of Jesus! Here's the schedule:

Friday, March 19 at 7pm: "Magic & Fun for Everyone" (a Family Magic Show with a Message) - Friday night is for the entire family (nursery is available for all services).

Saturday, March 20 at 7pm: "Paranormal" - During the first half of this program, Scott will entertain with astounding feats of “mental” magic and illusion. This program will be particularly effective for youth (10 and up), although ALL adults will benefit from the STRONG message. This presentation has been highly acclaimed by scientists, ministers, and even other magicians as one of the most entertaining and baffling presentations being seen on the stage today. You will learn the solid, Biblical answers to questions about astrology, fortune telling, contacting the dead, reincarnation, psychics, and many other perplexing mysteries of our time. We will have special activities (including inflatable games!) in the gym for kids on Saturday night!

Sunday at 8:30am; 10:45am; & 6pm: "Magic with a Message" - Scott will use magic & illusion and preach an evangelistic message in our AM & PM services (No Sunday School on March 21)

Please begin praying for Scott and those who will attend these services!

Upcoming Sat. AM Men's Breakfasts...

This Saturday at 8am at Sumner Reg. Med. Ctr, David Shrum will bring a testimony / devotion to our men. All men are invited! On April 10, we will combine with men from First Baptist Winchester and Dwight Lewis will speak.

Pastor's Weekly Update-Mar 3, 2010

Be Encouraged by God's Word ...

Show the wonder of your great love,
you who save by your right hand
those who take refuge in you from their foes.
Keep me as the apple of your eye;
hide me in the shadow of your wings.
  -- Psalm 17:7-8 NIV

"ONE: A Combined Worship Experience" at First Baptist Winchester St. This Sunday at 6PM...
This Sunday, March 7 at 6pm, we will worship with the congregation at First Baptist Winchester (290 E. Winchester St., Gallatin; www.firstbaptistgallatin.org
). I hope you will make time to be a part of this wonderful partnership with our brothers and sisters in Christ! They have asked me to preach at this service, just as we asked Pastor Derrick Jackson to preach at our church. I know that it would be nice for you to hear Pastor Jackson preach - I like to hear him too! But, don't use that as an excuse not to go!!! Music will involve people from both of our churches. Most of all, God's Presence will be with us, and He loves it when His family gets together!!! Bring finger foods for a time of fellowship following the service.

This Friday, March 5 at 12noon - "World Day of Prayer" Service at Free Methodist Church...

Sunday AM: "24 Hours That Changed the World..."
Remember our key question from Gethsemane last Sunday AM: "What Next Jesus?" or "Where Do We Go From Here?"  Christ doesn't always tell us where we're going, but He shows His disciples the strategy for "beating the press!" -  Praise, Prayer, and Surrender... every day... 40-day devotional books by Adam Hamilton are available in the church foyer for $5. Pastor's Weekly update--February 9, 2010
"Grant us, even us, O Lord, to know you, and love you, and rejoice in you."   -- St. Augustine

Watching that "white stuff" fall from the sky again this morning! Wow... God sure did create a lot of beauty in our world. Let's praise the Weather Maker even when He changes our plans!

Just For Fun...
While I was visiting with Charles Tomlinson's family in the waiting room of the VA Hospital yesterday, we were passing time by talking about the Saints winning the Super Bowl. Right after comments were made about how New Orleans must be "wild" with Super Bowl revelers, we heard a loud sax coming down the hospital hallway bellowing, "When the Saints Go Marching In." Behind the sax player were people dancing with Mardi Gras party sunglasses and beads. Then, Belmont University cheerleaders and a Bruin mascot came dancing in behind them, distributing beads to everybody in the waiting room. It definitely changed the mood of veterans and their families! After they included me in the bead distribution, Ann and Alan Tomlinson got a kick out of how "the Pastor was going to explain bringing home Mardi Gras beads" from his hospital visits! Oh well... just goes to show you that you never know what a day might bring! BTW: When I told Jackson (my 7th grade son) what happened, he said that he felt like he needed to go visit at the VA Hospital! What a generous young man we are raising  :)

"Thanks" from Pastor Billy Our Teens...
Good report from last weekend's spaghetti supper... our teens cleared almost $900 to help with "scholarships" for future youth events! Thanks for supporting our youth group.

Faith Promise & BBQ Lunch This Sunday...

Through our annual Faith Promise Sunday, we remember & rededicate ourselves to Christ's call to share the Good News with the whole world! Our guest speakers are Kathy Mowry and Jon Mowry. Kathy is currently a professor of Christian Education & Missions at Trevecca Nazarene University. The Mowry's served for several years as missionaries in Russia. On Feb. 14, we will have a special all-church lunch in the gym at 12 noon. BBQ lunch will be catered by Stroud's (BBQ sandwiches, beans, potato salad, slaw). All you need to bring to the lunch are desserts and drinks. (No PM Service). Plan now to attend, and pray about your Faith Promise $ pledge for missions for 2010. Watch for details in a brochure that you will receive in the mail later this week.

Children's Day Trip - Next Monday, Feb. 15...
Our kids are out of school for President's Day next Monday and Pastor Greg has arranged for a Day Trip to the Discovery Museum in Murfreesboro. Cost is $4 per person (ages 2 and under are free). All preschoolers must be accompanied by an adult. Also, bring $ for lunch at a local fast-food restaurant, and any souvenirs. Adult drivers & chaperones are needed. Contact Pastor Greg at 452-2101 or nashnaz@aol.com to sign-up.

New AM Sermon Series Begins: "24 Hours That Changed the World"...

I'm looking forward to this new series (based on the Bible, and a study by Adam Hamilton) of the last 24 hours of Jesus' life. Hamilton's terrific 40-day devotional book for Lent by the same title will be available at church this Sunday for $5. (You would pay $10 at the bookstore, but because you are getting them through the church, you save $! :) Even though Lent doesn't officially begin until Feb. 17 (Ash Wednesday), I wanted to get a "head-start" on the series and be able to cover each major event of Jesus' last day through Easter. I will preach through the designated passages of Scripture, and draw from Hamilton's study where appropriate. Here's the schedule:

Feb. 21: "The Last Supper" (Communion will be served)

Thanks...
We don't often get the kind of snow & ice that makes changes to our Sunday schedule necessary, but we sure did last weekend! Thanks for helping spread the word about our schedule change last Sunday, and to all were able to come worship & serve. We actually had good attendance and a wonderful day of worship! If you, or someone you know at our church, was not notified of our schedule change, it means they are not on our email list, or the telephone "prayer chain." We want everyone to get the info., so please pass along email addresses or phone numbers to Brenda Jackson at the church office (bjannwats@yahoo.com or 452-2101). Also, thanks to Tim Fuller for posting the sermons on our website (www.gallatinnazarene.com
) each week. If you weren't able to come to church last Sunday, but would like to download the message, it's under "podcasts" and titled: "Angst as a Gift from God." Tim has also made extra CD's available at the church this week.

New AM Sermon Series Begins This Sunday: "24 Hours That Changed the World"...

17 (Ash Wednesday), I wanted to get a "headstart" on the series and be able to cover each major event of Jesus' last day through Easter. I will preach through the designated passages of Scripture, and draw from Hamilton's study where appropriate. Here's the schedule:

Feb. 7: Introduction: "From Prophecy to Perfume"

Feb. 21: "The Last Supper" (Communion will be served)

Feb. 28: "The Garden of Gethsemane"

March 7: "Condemned by the Righteous"

March 14: "Jesus, Barabbas, and Pilate"

March 28: "The Torture and Humiliation of the King"

April 4 (Easter Sunday): "Jesus' Crucifixion & Resurrection"

(Special Services & Guest Speakers are planned for Feb. 14 & March 21)

Faith Promise Sunday, Feb. 14... Missions: "Love In Action!"

Through our annual Faith Promise Sunday, we remember & rededicate ourselves to Christ's call to share the Good News with the whole world! Our guest speaker is Kathy Mowry, professor of Christian Education & Missions at Trevecca Nazarene University. Kathy and her husband served for several years as missionaries in Russia.

"The Way" Spaghetti Dinner... This Saturday at 6pm

Our teens are hosting a spaghetti dinner at the gym this Saturday at 6pm to raise funds for upcoming youth ministry events. Cost is $10 per person. Max is $25 per family. Let's support our teens! Pastor Billy wants those helping with the dinner to be at the church by 4pm on Saturday.

Be Encouraged by God’s Word ...

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."  — Philippians 4:6-7 NIV

Return to the "Simple Life"...

This Sunday, we will return to our "Simple Life" series with a look at aligning our money with our mission. Almost everyone struggles in some way with managing material things. We'll take a look at what the Bible has to say about stewardship, and how we can become the people God desires us to be in this area. In order to take this a step further, Frank & Sylvia Ruckman will be leading Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University at our church, starting in February. There is a free preview of this course offered on Wednesday, Jan. 27 at 6:30pm.

On Sunday evenings at 6pm, we have been looking at our responsibility to witness by studying God's Word, and watching video clips from "The Way of the Master" by Kirk Cameron & Ray Comfort.

2009 Contributions Statements Available...

Speaking of finances, the 2009 Church Contribution Statements are available for pickup in the church foyer. These should help as you begin to prepare your 2009 income tax return. She will be in contact with our Church Treasurer to make any needed corrections. Thank you for your faithful giving to the Lord through our church!

Children's Ministries Update...

Our nursery & preschool area is bursting at the seams!  Because of this, we are adding an additional room for the Sunday services to accommodate the numbers and age groups.  However, this means more workers are needed.  In a week of ministry 30 workers are needed to adequately minister to the needs of our little ones (2 Sunday morning services, Sunday School, Sunday PM service and Wednesday PM service).  We are trying to rotate workers so that they only have to work, on average, once a month, and there are some who are doing double & triple duty.  With this said, a month's rotation requires 92 positions that need to be filled.  Currently, 36 of these positions are unfilled!
Here are the specific needs: Sunday morning Toddler Class workers (especially in second service), Sunday School assistants, Sunday night workers.  Grandparents, dads, and older teenagers are welcome additions! If you are willing to help, please contact Children's Pastor Greg Nash ASAP at 452-2101 or nashnaz@aol.com.

Pastor's Weekly Update--January 12, 2010

"Bring joy to your servant,
     for to you, O Lord,
     I lift up my soul.
You are forgiving and good, O Lord,
abounding in love to all who call to you."
— Psalm 86:4-5 NIV

I hope you're having a good day and that your week is off to a good start! My kids thought it was just awful that they had to go back to school this morning... after all, due to the unexpected "winter vacation" they went to school 2 whole days last week!!! But, alas, all good things must come to an end, so it's back to the "grind" for them today! (I hope you can see the sarcasm dripping from the computer screen). After the cold snap we've had lately, tomorrow's 40+ degree temps might feel like summertime! Enough about the weather... here's what's happening at the church...

Special Speaker This Sunday... Daryl Murray from "Welcome Home" Ministries
This Sunday, January 17 we will take a break from the "Simple Life" series to hear from Daryl Murray of Welcome Home Ministries (www.WelcomeHomeMin.org). You will also hear testimonies of how God is delivering men from brokenness and giving them a new start! Sensing God's call to help men who were "coming to their senses" and wanting to leave behind a lifestyle of addiction, Daryl began Welcome Home in Nashville in 1992. Their mission is "to enter worlds of brokenness so that they might experience wholeness in Christ."  Don't miss this great day!

Last Week for Submissions for the 2010 Gallatin Nazarene Business Directory...

This new year of 2010 could be a turning point for many in our congregation.  Both spiritually and economically, we want what is best for God’s family.  Our congregation is blessed with many who own their own business or have a God given talent: business owners / entrepreneurs, that provide Insurance, Auto Repair, Medical providers, Dry-wall companies, Carpenters, Electricians, Window Treatment Specialists, Plumbers, Carpet businesses, Landscaping, C.P.A.’s, House cleaning, etc. Wouldn’t it be a “blessing” if those of us NEEDING some of the above listed services could turn to someone in our congregation who could PROVIDE those necessary services? Therefore, your Church Board has agreed that we could provide such a list.

Our goal is to spend a couple of weeks telling those in our congregation what we are trying to do.  We plan on allowing those business owners / entrepreneurs the opportunity to fill out a form (attached to his email, or available at the Welcome Center), listing any information they want included. We will ONLY include those who fill out the information in a timely fashion.  Deadline is JANUARY 17thThen, the information will be compiled, printed, and announced.  We will have major headings, and then businesses under each heading will be listed alphabetically.  Every church family will be able to obtain this business directory from the Welcome Center.  This is NOT any attempt to highlight any business above any other, but ONLY as a way of “connecting” a business owner with those who may not know what services are available.

Business forms should be dropped off at the Welcome Center, OR may also be e-mailed to Dr. Frank Ruckman by Jan. 17 (ruckmanf@gmail.com

).

District Ladies Breakaway is Sat., Jan. 30 - Register This Week!
I have attached a registration form for the Ladies Breakaway on Saturday, Jan. 30 at Nashville Grace Church of the Nazarene. Registration deadline is Jan. 15. Please contact Jeni Sterling at 615-772-5639 if you have any additional questions about this event.

Another way to help R.T. Fisher...
Hardware Purchases? Why not help our "adopted school"... RT Fisher? In addition to the recycling and food programs, I've attached a letter from ACE Hardware that Principal Cotter has partnered with to help the school. Just thought I'd pass it along. A percentage of your purchase goes to the school.

January 17 (AM): Special Guest: Daryl Murray from "Welcome Home" Ministries...
On Sunday, January 17 we will take a break from the "Simple Life" series to hear from Daryl Murray of Welcome Home Ministries (www.WelcomeHomeMin.org
). You will also hear testimonies of how God is delivering men from brokenness and giving them a new start! Sensing God's call to help men who were "coming to their senses" and wanting to leave behind a lifestyle of addiction, Daryl began Welcome Home in Nashville in 1992. Their mission is "to enter worlds of brokenness so that they might experience wholeness in Christ."  Daryl and his wife, Glenda, are members at Nashville First Church of the Nazarene and Daryl formerly served as Youth Pastor at Hendersonville Nazarene. Don't miss this great day!

2010 Gallatin Nazarene Business Directory...

ruckmanf@gmail.com

Pastor’s Weekly Update -December 30, 2009

Last weekly update of the year... wow! It's hard to believe another year (and decade) is almost behind us. I hope you have had some time over the holidays to visit with family & friends and to reflect on God's faithfulness. Our family has enjoyed hosting and spending time with Julie's family this week. Last Sunday was the first time since Julie's mother died (in 1995) that her whole family has been able to attend a church service together. Needless to say, it was a special weekend for us. God is truly good in the tragedies and victories of life!
Here's a thoughtful and beautiful prayer from D.L. Moody to consider today:

"Take my heart for your abode; my mouth to spread abroad the glory of your name; my love and all my powers for the advancement of your believing people; and never allow the steadfastness and confidence of my faith to abate-that so at all times I may be enabled from the heart to say, "Jesus needs me, and I Him."  — Dwight L. Moody

New Year's Eve Family Fun & Prayer...

From 9:30pm-11:30pm there will be games & fellowship in the gym, including an inflatable for kids and our very own Gallatin version of the gameshow: "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader!" Then, at 11:30pm we will gather for prayer & praise in the sanctuary. It ought to a be a great night! Bring a 2 liter drink and some snacks to share.

Pastor’s Weekly Update -December 22, 2009

Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,
"Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests."

— Luke 2:13-14 NIV

The earth has grown old with its burden of care,
But at Christmas it always is young,
The heart of the jewel burns lustrous and fair,
And its soul full of music breaks the air,
When the song of angels is sung.

Merry Christmas! May songs of joy capture your heart and explode from your mouth this Christmas.

Thanks...
What a wonderful Christmas musical last Sunday morning! Thanks to Pastor Glenna for her leadership, and to the following who donated their time and talent to make it a special day: David & Dana Smith (set/props; sound); Ron Bizzell (video); Jack Gregory (costumes); Jo Anne Little (sanctuary & gym) decorations; Margaret Kirkham (breakfast); Pastor Greg Nash & Leila Coward (children's coordinators); and all Choir & cast members for "Light of the World." Your efforts inspired us and have left a positive Christmas impression on the hearts of all who attended! Also, thanks to Pastor Steve Oldham and all who participated in Sunday night's Carols by Candlelight - a very moving & meaningful reminder of the story of our salvation!

Opportunities to Bless Others...

Please read the attached info for details.

2010 Building Fund Update (following Sunday, 12/20/09)...
Good news!!! In the last 4 weeks, we have received approx. $17,000 toward our 2010 Building Fund. Our goal before 2010 starts is $18,000... we're almost there! (This amount includes $ from an anonymous donor in "matching" gifts.). Plus, our Treasurer tells me that we actually had $7,000 in our building fund before the campaign started! So, we have a total of approx. $24,000 in our building fund at this point. This gives us a good start on our 2010 campaign for several needed building improvements. In January, we will distribute pledge cards so that you may let us know what you hope to give to this fund throughout the year (helps us with planning). Please begin praying about your pledge. Our goal for the campaign is $125,000. We're almost at 20% before 2010 begins! Pastor’s Weekly Update -December 16, 2009

"Don't be satisfied with angels. Don't be content with stars in the sky. Seek him out as the shepherds did. Long for him as Simeon did. Worship him as the wise men did...God rewards those who seek him. Not those who seek doctrine or religion or systems or creeds. Many settle for these lesser passions, but the reward goes to those who settle for nothing less than Jesus himself. And what is the reward? What awaits those who seek Jesus? Nothing short of the heart of Jesus. "And as the Spirit of the Lord works within us, we become more and more like him" (2 Cor. 3:18 TLB).

Can you think of a greater gift than to be like Jesus? Christ felt no guilt; God wants to banish yours. Jesus had no bad habits; God wants to remove yours. Jesus had no fear of death; God wants you to be fearless. Jesus had kindness for the diseased and mercy for the rebellious and courage for the challenges. God wants you to have the same... He loves you just the way you are, but he refuses to leave you that way. He wants you to be just like Jesus."  (Max Lucado, Just Like Jesus)

2010 Building Fund Update...
Good news!!! In the last 3-4 weeks, we have received approx. $16,000 toward our 2010 Building Fund. (This amount includes at least $6,000 from an anonymous donor in "matching" gifts.). Plus, our Treasurer tells me that we actually had $7,000 in our building fund before the campaign started! So, we have a total of approx. $23,000 in our building fund at this point. This gives us a good start on our 2010 campaign for several needed building improvements. In January, we will distribute pledge cards so that you may let us know what you hope to give to this fund throughout the year (helps us with planning). Please begin praying about your pledge. Our goal for the year is $125,000. We're almost at 20% before 2010 begins! Project we must address in 2010: a new roof; Projects we hope to address in 2010: remodeling of the sanctuary foyer, Fireside Room, kitchen, office area, children's classrooms, and youth sanctuary.

Pastor’s Weekly Update -December 9, 2009

The Christmas countdown is in full swing! It won't be long until kids (and adults) tear open their presents and discover their Christmas gifts. What a fun time!  What's the best Christmas present you've ever received? What made that gift so special? Think about the gift. Describe it. Smile!

The Apostle Paul beams as he describes (Ephesians 1) the greatest Gift he has ever received. This Gift was not wrapped in paper, but in human flesh. Paul's Gift was born in a humble manger to a virgin named Mary. Listen to Paul's joy when he reflects on God's gift of His Son, Jesus: "How blessed is God! And what a blessing he is! He's the Father of our Master, Jesus Christ, and takes us to the high places of blessing in him. Long before he laid down earth's foundations, he had us in mind, had settled on us as the focus of his love, to be made whole and holy by his love. Long, long ago he decided to adopt us into his family through Jesus Christ. (What pleasure he took in planning this!) He wanted us to enter into the celebration of his lavish gift-giving by the hand of his beloved Son." Eph 1:3-6 (The Message)

Get a Bible and read Ephesians 1:3-14 slowly. Paul praises God for blessings we enjoy in Christ: purpose, love, forgiveness, wisdom, hope, and joy! What a great Gift! Let's remember Jesus - the very best Gift!

Good Report from St. Louis Teen Bible Quiz... I have heard that we were well represented at a huge Bible quiz event held last weekend in St. Louis. Cole Hodge, Trent Hodge, and Samuel Foster all finished in the Top 100 quizzers out of a nation-wide field of 250+. Cole Hodge finished 13th overall!!! Congratulations to these guys and their coach, James Hodge.

2010 Capital Campaign for Building Improvements...
Dennis Powers (Finance Comm. Chairman) informed our congregation that we are launching a special financial campaign to raise money for the following improvements to our facilities: New roof for sanctuary, and remodeling and improvements for the following areas: foyer, Fireside Room, office, kitchen, children's classrooms, youth sanctuary. All estimates are not complete, but the total is believed to be in the $100k-$125k range. The official "kick-off" for the campaign is scheduled for January 2010, but if we raise $9,000 before the end of the year, there is an anonymous donor who will match that amount. Wouldn't it be great to raise almost 20% of our goal before the campaign officially begins?! That's why Dennis gave the challenge. Please pray about a gift toward the 2010 Building Improvements Fund before the end of the year.

Praise God from Whom all blessings flow!

Praise Him all creatures here below;

Praise Him above ye heavenly hosts;

Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost!
It was good for my soul to be a part of Mary Nell Messer's funeral yesterday. Once again, I was reminded that God fills ordinary people with His love so that they can make an extraordinary difference for Him. Mary Nell was a great influence on her family and friends, and even in her darkest days she allowed the Light (Christ Jesus) to shine through her! Just wish I could have tasted her famous fried chicken and "tooty fruity" ice cream! May we follow her lead today. Let's lift Frank (her husband) and their family in prayer.

Happy Thanksgiving!

"On your feet now -- applaud God!

 Bring a gift of laughter,

 sing yourselves into his presence.

Know this: GOD is God, and God, GOD.

He made us; we didn't make him.

We're his people, his well-tended sheep.

Enter with the password: "Thank you!"

Make yourselves at home, talking praise.

Thank him. Worship him.

For God is sheer beauty,

all-generous in love,

loyal always and ever."

I hope that you are able to gather with family & friends sometime this week to celebrate Thanksgiving! Don't just count your blessings... celebrate the Giver of All good things!

Great Report from Community Thanksgiving Service...
We enjoyed a wonderful service last Sunday evening at Gallatin First Baptist (Main St.)! The sanctuary was absolutely packed with over 600 people from a wide variety of churches. Commonwealth Quartet & the Mass Choir from First Baptist (Winchester St.) sang beautifully, and Rev. Jerry Wallace (First United Methodist) brought a good Thanksgiving message. Over $3,000 was raised for Children Are People. Communion was received. It was a good night! Thanks to Pastor Steve Oldham for his good leadership in coordinating this event for our community.

Pastor’s Weekly Update -November 17, 2009

I have been re-reading Warren Wiersbe's Victorious Christians You Should Know. With Thanksgiving rapidly approaching, I want to pass along a portion of his chapter about Fanny Crosby, one of the Church's most prolific hymn writers ("To God Be the Glory," "Blessed Assurance," "Praise Him! Praise Him!," "Redeemed," "Jesus Keep Me Near the Cross,"...etc... etc...).

She was born in Putnam County, New York, on March 24, 1820. When she was only six weeks old, she developed a minor eye inflammation, and the doctor's careless treatment left her blind. "It seemed intended by the blessed Providence of God that I should be blind all my life," she wrote in her delightful autobiography (1903), "and I thank Him for that dispensation." The doctor who destroyed her sight never forgave himself and moved from the area, but Fanny Crosby held no ill will toward him. "If I could meet him now," she wrote, "I would say 'Thank you, thank you' - over and over again - for making me blind." In fact, she claimed that if she could have her sight restored, she would not attempt it. She felt that her blindness was God's gift to her so that she could write songs for His glory. "I could not have written thousands of hymns," she said, "if I had been hindered by the distractions of seeing all the interesting and beautiful objects that would have been presented to my notice."

She wrote her first poem when she was eight years old. Here it is...

Oh, what a happy child I am, although I cannot see!

I am resolved that in this world contented I will be.

How many blessings I enjoy that other people don't!

So weep or sigh because I'm blind, I cannot, nor I won't!

Thank You's...
Thanks to Danny Sullivan and all who helped with our recent Church Work Day! And, special thanks to JoAnn Little (decorations), Margie Carter (food coordinator), and Wade Power's SS Class (turkey cookers) for making our Thanksgiving Dinner last Sunday night a great one!

Pastor’s Weekly Update -November 3, 2009

What a beautiful Fall day! Aren't you amazed by the beauty of all that God has made? I like this quote from D.I. Vanderpool:

"Faith is a microscope with which one may discern God's fingerprints on current events, reassuring us that God has not forgotten to be faithful."

Let's watch for "God's fingerprints" this week!

Great Reports from Last Weekend!
  • On Sunday night, we concluded our first season of Upward Flag Football & Cheerleading with a "packed house" for our Awards Celebration. Our special guest, magician Stephen Bargatze was a big hit! He tricked us, made us laugh, and pointed us to the Good News about Jesus! All 75 kids received awards for their participation, and we thanked League Coordinators Loren & Shonnie Speicher for an outstanding job in directing our league. You can view lots of Upward pictures at www.gallatinnazarenekids.shutterfly.com. We believe that the league will grow even larger next Fall! Thanks to all who have volunteered their time and prayed for Upward - it's definitely a Kingdom-building ministry to our community! We received another $521.49 for the Stephen Hardaway Medical fund in a special offering. That brings our total giving for this "Upward family" to almost $2,000. Stephen's mother, Jessica, wanted me to thank you for your generosity and for your prayers for 3 year-old Stephen. He will have a CAT scan this week to see what effect the chemotherapy is having on the tumor in his chest. Let's keep praying that God will heal little Stephen!
  • Saturday night's "Trunk or Treat" went very well! We estimate that 500+ people came through our parking lot between 6-8pm. This is just another way to show our community that we care about them by providing a fun & safe Halloween alternative for their kids. "Best Trunk" honors this year were shared by the Primeaux's "Jungle trunk" and Josh Curd's & Jennifer Wood's "Ghostbusters trunk." However, there is no doubt that the Smith's "Sponge Bob" was the most photographed costume of the night! I think Andrew Smith deserves special recognition for walking around as a 7 ft. sponge all night!
  • 8 teams participated in a windy Golf Tournament last Friday afternoon!. Thanks to Pastor Glenna Sandel & Reese Legge for coordinating this event. Reese's team won the tournament by 5 strokes with a team score of 60 (-10)! Congratulations!
This Sunday, Sunday, Nov. 8 - Veterans Honored & Baptism Service...
We have scheduled a Baptism Service for this Sunday AM, Nov. 8. If you would like to be baptized, please contact me (kylepoole@gallatinnazarene.com) this week so that we can discuss the significance of this sacrament. Also on the 8th, we will honor all of our military veterans. Please submit a photo (preferably in uniform) to Pastor Steve Oldham (steveo922@comcast.net) this week so that we may include it in a special presentation in Morning Worship.
