Missionary Newsletter, June 2011

In May, our church hosted the Mission Area Rally (zone rally).  Many churches were represented, even one from outside our mission area.   Bob Skinner spoke about what God is doing in Ukraine.  Thanks to ALL who prayed, came or helped in any way to enable us to have this service.  When asked if anyone remembered the Middendorf’s, Skinner replied people are still talking about all the great meals the Middendorfs prepared for them.  You may remember Dr. Jesse and Martha Middendorf lived in the Ukraine for a few months.

I am thankful we now have a missions Wednesday once a month.  So far, we have explored the children of South Asia, education for children and forgotten people, both in our neighborhoods and far away.

Memorial Day weekend, we remembered those who in the last year had gone to meet Jesus.  We miss them.  We gave memorial roll remembrances to families for Robert Bethea, Travis Burton,  Vernette Cantrell and Burnest L. Cook. To read more about memorial rolls, please see http://www.nazarenemissions.org/10001/story.aspx

A Distinguished Service Award had not been given in some time at our church.  This year two were given, recommended by the Missionary Council.  The first was given to Donna Shoemaker for her ministry to the ladies in jail.  Donna has given Jesus for twenty-five years and is still giving Jesus, both behind the scenes and in person.  The second award was given to Karen and Stanley Van Den Berg.  Karen was NMI president, leading our work and witness team to Costa Rica and Belize, as well as was on the District Council before she got sick.  We’re so thankful the Lord has seen fit to heal her and bring her back to us.  Stanley was given the award because he has given his time and expertise to build the welcome desk, the trophy case and the library cart, just to name a few.

I’m still learning and have come to the conclusion in the future we will present the Distinguished Service Award on Sunday night.  Having two services in the morning meant that people were not aware what went on in the other service.  Perhaps you have someone your group would like to honor.  If you’d like more information, please go to

If I can help in any way, please call me.

Darla Chaniott spoke on Sunday night, as did, her dad, Marc, about what God is doing in her life the day before she and Marc, boarded the plane to go to Haiti with a group from Nashville First.  They worked construction while Marc was there for 10 days.  Darla stayed for a couple of more weeks, working with the medical team.  Word has it, she wanted to stay longer, but had to come home.

Upcoming Events:

1. NMI Conference per Becky Hancock Tennessee District NMI

Plans for this summer have changed recently due to the celebration of our district's 100th anniversary. There will be a service on Wednesday night, July 6, to commemorate this event followed by our district assembly and ordination service on Thursday, July 7. Our NMI convention has been moved to Friday, July 8 and will have no evening service. I hope you will be able to join us for a day of joyful worship and inspiration with missionaries Bob and Colleen Skinner from Ukraine. All events will be held at Nashville First Church.

2. Manchester, England Mission Trip

Jack Gregory, Loren Speicher, his dad, Richard, Olivia Harris, Kenny Keene, Roger Costa, Larry and I will be going to Manchester, England by way of London on a work and witness trip. We are excited about helping renovate part of the dorms in the university.  Please pray for us, that we will work together like fruit and not stones, that God will do a work in our lives, and last, but not least, that we would be Jesus to those who don’t know Him.

3.  SIERRA LEONE

Bill and Dotty Jones, Stan Jones’ parents, have agreed to come and share with us on Wednesday night,  July 13th, about their recent 4 month trip to Sierra Leone.  I first heard then tell about their experience in one of the Sunday School classes and can hardly wait to hear the latest.  God is up to something in West Africa and I want to be a part.

 4.July 5th-11th 2011- NYC (Nazarene Youth Conference)

The experience is jam packed with dynamic speakers, worship with thousands of other high school students and sponsors from the USA and Canada, informative breakout sessions with leaders in the church, service projects in the community, high energy concerts from some leading artists in Christian music, and so much more.”
